Major kudos to Lockport City Court Judge Tom DiMillo for doing what too many weak-minded judges have been unwilling to do: take on absentee landlords that do little to enhance the quality of life in a community.
DiMillo whacked Martiza Brown-Igwe, owner of two properties in the city who was found guilty of 14 building code violations, with a whopping $18, 420 in fines.
This is exactly the type of action that needs to be taken in Lockport. For too long, the building inspection has allowed absentee landlords to run roughshod over the community. When they did do their job with any level of effectiveness, there was never a prosecuting attorney or a judge to actually enforce the law.
That's changed. There's a new sheriff in town, and his name is Tom DiMillo. Scumbag absentee landlords beware.
