Upstate/Downstate Disconnect

The following is a youtube video from October of 2007 in which former State Senator James Wright is forced to defend Upstate NY, once again, from the diluted perception of one NYC Senator. We've all heard about NYC interests and the disconnect between Upstate and Downstate, but when you actually see and hear a NYC lawmaker talk about how Upstate doesn't need or deserve any Homeland Security money because there is nothing Upstate worth defending, it's quite disconcerting.

Yes, and these are the ass clowns that are a couple of seats away from taking the Majority of the Senate.

If you live in the North Country and you vote Democrat in the special election next week, then you are a self-loathing jackass.

Isn't Senator Parker the same guy who believes NY taxpayers should be paying reparations for slavery?

Maybe we should just disconnect ourselves financially from NYC all together...then watch upstate flourish and NYC finally get what it deserves (which is just what they put in...def not their proportion)

Why do you think I get annoyed at the term 'Upstate'. No, we are not 'Upstate', New York City is Downstate. We're just the state. It's like Florida calling the rest of the country 'Upper USA'.

That's a great point, Northender ...

Makes you wonder if Sen. Parker or others from NYC have ever been north or west of Albany. There is life beyond the Tappanzee Bridge, regardless of what he thinks.

I sure hope that more senators other than Jim Wright rose up to slap this idiot across the back of the head.

PC,

On the money again, as always. The Senate Dem confernce has zero upstaters in leadership positons except for Bill Stachowski...Stack as head of Senate Finance would be the only brightside with the Kevin Parker's of the world taking charge...

Then again...."Honey, call the movers, we're getting outta here."

Again this is just another bit of evidence that partisan politics can’t force a unity of general social concern nor an awareness of the real material interests of others on the basis of a parliamentary politics. Party politics is dead in terms of its real political efficacity. It’s irrational, non-sensical. NYC’s interests are not our interests. Yes, we need to cut ourselves off. Establish a regional identity, a sense of who we are for ourselves and a regional project of economic self-sufficiency. Make it clear what our interests are. Like taking control of Niagara power. Like not accepting our land as the waste dump of industry. Make Niagara Falls really one of the wonders of the world as opposed to something analogous to Wal-mart in the retail world. Why try to unify in action or rationalize in discourse relationships, whether to NYC or American capitalist interests, that are in fundamental conflict. Why try to reconcile through an irrelevant and impotent parliamentary process, interests and issues that can only be served/solved locally when the locality realizes nobody else really cares. Why fight for crumbs from the so-called “Federal” government or State government? Why be the blood supply for NYC or anybody else. If T.S. Eliot were still alive he could write the sequel to The Wasteland based on Niagara County. Apparently there are more people leaving NC than rats leaving all the sinking ships in the history of maritime. Why quibble about such so-called practical yet really only piecemeal concerns, when it looks to me like the ship is going down?

WoW.....I cant believe that guy actully said any of that . How in the hell did he ever get elected. I mean come on . I dont care what party either one is a part of, that was a just a stupid person getting put in his place.

I really think that it wont matter if the senate flips party control this year or not. Whomever is in office that represents NYC will continue to think that the rest of the state is a bunch of schulbs who dont deserve a damn thing. But they sure as hell will take our money. I bet that none of them even remember that UPSTATE NY had tp bail them out in the 70`s all the while we were losing job`s and services right here. Now that they are going strong were is our help? Well you just say it!!!
