The race to fill the seat being vacated by retiring Niagara County Legislator Mal Needler pits former school board member Scott Schultz against Paul Wojtaszek.
Wojtaszek, a law clerk, is the brother of Niagara County GOP Chairman Henry Wojtaszek.
Both candidates seem to have a reasonable grasp of county issues. We have some concern with Schultz's role in bringing in NT Superintendent Vincent Vecchiarella. As we've covered before, Vindictive Vince has a less than pleasant history which doesn't seem to have improved with time. Since Schultz obviously had not conducted a thorough background check on Vecchiarella before hiring him as the head honcho for the school board, what other "details" will he overlook?
Wojtaszek has deep political roots in the community, which depending on your perspective, may be a good thing or a bad thing. His plan to create a "medicaid watchdog" is intriguing, in that we have repeatedly heard members of the Leg talk about the burden of Medicaid.
Frankly, the problem is not the recipients, it's the providers that are responsible for the massive fraud in the system, so if Wojtaszek is going to promote attacking that end of the problem, we are all for it.
In a tightly contested race, Wojtaszek wins 55% - 45%.
